Favourite Designers: Henry Holland

Henry Holland (designer, DJ, TV presenter, Agyness Deyn's gay best friend) is the man single-handedly making fashion fun. His collections mix bright colours and bold patterns with a laidback 'don't care' attitude, and this is the reason why they are so successful. Instead of stuffy, over-expensive haute couture, he caters for real people- mostly young, fashion-forward city-dwellers like himself. His label H! By Henry Holland was launched exclusively for Debenhams last spring and as a result, cemented his place in the British fashion elite. His catwalk label, House of Holland, is an international success, worn by celebrities such as Lindsay Lohan and M.I.A and stocked in some of the most prestigious chains worldwide including Harvey Nichols and Barneys.

All not too bad for a man who stumbled into the design industry by accident. After graduating from The London College of Printing with a BA in Journalism, Holland went straight to fashion editor at series of teen magazines. It was his now-notorious slogan t-shirts that catapulted Holland into the design spotlight (and he has come a long way since). His 80's inspired neon t-shirts brandished bold rhymes about supermodels and fashion designers such as "I'll tell you who's boss, Kate Moss", "Get yer freak on Giles Deacon", "Flick yer bean for Agyness Deyn" and "I've got more than a handful for Naomi Campbell".   They were copied to death by high street stores but still remain as what he is best known for.

Holland also has quite an impressive social life. He has been best friends with London's coolest crowd (Agyness Deyn, Pixie Geldof, etc) since his teenage years and his latest designs are always sported by them first. Alongside running two fashion labels, he also recently presented Channel 4's fashion/music show 'Frock Me' alongside Alexa Chung and Gemma Cairney and collaborated with denim giant Levi for an exclusive denim-based collection- Britain's busiest fashion designer perhaps?

House of Holland has just released this quirky music video starring model-of-the-moment Eliza Cummings to showcase the Pre-SS 2012 Resort collection. The obligatory bright colours and vivid patterns show some heavy Mexican influences (and possibly the return of the poncho?) These are my favourites from the collection-

"Looking stupid's part of the fun" said Holland about fashion- He doesn't take it seriously and this is reflected in his creations. His clothes demonstrate a playful attitude to fashion- patterns and colours are clashed, textures are mixed and yet it works. His famous 'suspender tights' are just one of the many trends he has kickstarted all over the world. Intense, flamboyant, powerful designs are his signature and he certainly does colour like no other.

It may be a 'London girl aesthetic' that is the inspiration behind all his designs, but they are seen all over the world.
