The best of Resort 2013 collections: Valentino

It is impossible not to fall in love with a Valentino collection. Even the very name suggests romance, and as always, this is exactly what Pier Paolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri deliver with their Resort 2013 collection. Opulence, drama and femininity establish themselves in red-carpet-worthy gowns, practical workwear and sleek day-dresses. Lace is the primary fabric in this collection, covering everything from whole gowns and entire trouser suits to small panels on t-shirts, suggesting that lace, especially coloured lace, will be as popular as ever next summer. Pastel hues also look to remain a key trend, as do kitten heels, stripes and prim collars.  However it is intricate detailing, embroidery and ultimately, exceptional dress-making, that makes this collection, and Valentino as a brand overall, so very special. Hours of work go into creating just one of these much-sought-after gowns (I say gowns, because sometimes a simple 'dress' just isn't enough) and nobody does a gown quite like Valentino. They are perfect, understated and elegant every season. But this collection also brings demure, retro glamour to the equation, resulting in silhouettes and styles which wouldn't be out of place in the swinging Sixties.
